Our Story

Hello, I'm Jenni, the maker behind The Mossy Lantern.

As a little girl with a wild imagination, I believed the world was alive with hidden stories. Knotted, moss-covered tree roots became tiny gnome homes. Sunlight filtering through the forest canopy marked secret gateways into the realm of the Fae. Every winding woodland path promised adventure, and every weathered stone seemed as though it had witnessed centuries of forgotten tales.

That sense of wonder stayed with me into my teen and young adult years, where I romanticized every interaction, and experienced new places with a sense of awe and joy. I never saw the world as ordinary.

That optimism and imagination struggled to survive as an adult though. For sixteen years I taught art, encouraging others to create with their own hands. More recently, my journey led me into the video game industry, where I became an artist creating fantasy worlds for others to explore.

Both jobs were creative, but nearly every hour of my day was spent either pouring myself into others, or sitting in front of a glowing screen. The pace became faster. The days became busier. Deadlines replaced daydreams. I was exhausted at the end of nearly every day. Although I was designing fantastical places or encouraging others to do so, I had forgotten how to find the magic in my own life.

I also realized I was missing something deeply human. I missed creating with my hands. I missed the quiet satisfaction of making something tangible, something that existed beyond the screen. I longed for creative practices that invited me to slow down and engage with the world through my senses.

I wanted my home to feel like the pages of an old fairy tale, a forgotten library tucked deep within a castle, or a cottage in the woods where candlelight glowed in every window. More than anything, I wanted to return to wonder.

As I searched for that feeling, I found myself looking to the practices of the past. Not because life was better, but because our ancestors understood something we are in danger of forgetting. Their days were filled with small rituals. They gathered herbs from gardens and forests, stitched clothing by hand, tended the hearth, brewed tea, carved wood, told stories, and marked the changing of the seasons with intention. Beauty and wonder were not reserved for special occasions. It was woven into everyday life.

Those traditions remind us that creating with our hands is a way of slowing down, caring for our homes, connecting with nature, and remembering that ordinary moments can become fantastical when we approach them with intention.

The Mossy Lantern grew from that.

It's my invitation to you to step away from the constant pull of screens, if only for a little while, and rediscover the quiet magic that has been waiting all along. Light a cone of incense before opening a beloved book. Fill your home with the scent of an ancient forest. Spend an evening embroidering by lamplight. Begin a ritual that belongs entirely to you.

I believe fantasy has never fully been about escaping reality. It is, admittedly, a lovely excuse to disappear into forgotten kingdoms for a while, but its greatest gift is what it leaves behind when we return. It teaches us to look more closely, to find courage in unexpected places, to remain curious, and to believe that ordinary moments can still hold extraordinary beauty. It reminds us that the world is richer, stranger, and more magical than we often allow ourselves to see. Wonder still lives quietly beneath the surface of everyday life for those willing to notice it.
